Soflens Natural Colors - India

The online storlensstore.fi sent me an email offering a pair of contact lenses to try. I like changing my eye colour to suit my make-up, so I chose a pair of lenses!

These are Bausch & Lomb Soflens Natural Colors lenses in India. For some weird reason the lensstore.fi site does not have colour charts of all the coloured lenses they offer, so I just googled to find out what the shades were. India has a dark brown outer circle with toffee colour on the inner parts. On my grey-green eyes they give the impression of light, warm brown eyes.

Natural Colors can be worn for a month daily. Nice lenses if you want a natural looking colour boost! Blend in nicely with light eyes and give a subtle colour change. In lensstore, the price for a pair is 20,50e. If your eyes need different power lenses, you need to order two packs, because each one always has two similar lenses.

Another angle.

My natural eye colour for comparison.

Lensstore.fi is meant for Finnish customers and ships from Sweden. Only a shipping fee of 5 euros is added to any order, which is quite low in my experience. The first pair of lenses I received was faulty (not their fault, just normal glitches in the production process!) but they shipped a replacement very fast, so I was very happy with the service :)

How to do UV-gel Nails with Tips

I purchased a pack of coloured nail tips via eBay from China, and my friend Anniina wanted to try doing nails, so I volunteered! It was easy to take pictures when someone else was working on the nails, so here's a tutorial.

With purple glitter tips.
This tutorial is for gel nails with tips, meaning the little plastic things that look also like the false nails you can buy at dollar stores, but tips only cover a part of your natural nail. They come in many colours and shapes and can be cut and filed. I usually buy my nail tips through eBay from UK or China.
You need:
UV-gel (pink or clear if you have coloured tips)
UV-gel top coat (optional, you can also just polish the finished nail)
UV-oven
Cleanser (acetone, don't use nailpolish removers with added oils. Pure acetone is the best)
A brush
A nailfile
Lint-free wipes

Superglue (or nail glue, usually the same stuff)
Nail tips (coloured or pre-painted ones if you don't want to finish off with regular nailpolish, or natural or clear if you want to add polish on top)

1. Cut your own nails short. You can keep nails longer if you want, but you can feel the nail edge on the underside of the gel nails and it might be harder keep your nails clean.

My natural nails cut short.
2. File the nail surface rough to give the gel something to hold on to. I use sandpaper (400 grit) but rough nail files work well also. I like how you can easily fold the sandpaper to the shape you need at the moment!

Nail surface is filed to give it texture.
3. Choose the right size tips for each nail and glue them on. You want the tips to to be rather a bit too large than too small, because you can easily file off the extra from the edges. Depending on how you want the nails to look, position the tip to start anywhere between 3 mm - 8 mm from the natural nail tip. With natural or clear tips you don't have to be so careful, because you will be putting nailpolish on top anyways, so the edge doesn't show. (You can see an example on Anniina's nails below, she has natural coloured tips with no polish on yet)

Add glue (I use regular superglue) carefully.

4. Check that each tip is positioned right, if not, dissolve the glue with nailpolish remover or UV cleanser and re-glue it. Cut the tips to the desired length and finish with a nail file to get the edges neat.

Uncut tips, this is how long you can make your nails with these ones!
I didn't want very long nails, so they were cut shorter.
5. Add the UV-gel on top. Carefully paint the part of your natural nail that shows and the whole tip. You should do 2-3 thin layers to to make sure each one cures. Doing more than one layer also helps if there are any gaps left, you can easily fix them with the next layer. UV-gel is fairly strong, so your nails don't need to be very thick.

Add the UV-gel with a brush.
6. If you want to add an UV-gel top coat, this is the time. Wipe the residue from the nails and check the shape, file off any bumps and snags if there are some left. Usually the nails are ready at this point with not much filing. If you wish, you can add regular nailpolish on top and treat them like natural nails. I recommend putting some lotion on your hands and using cuticle oil, if your skin feels dry!

Finished nails! Mine have ready-made purple glitter tips.

Current Obsessions

Curls
I splurged on a new curling iron, because I wanted one that gives large curls that look more like waves when brushed open. And since I totally love my Remington Pearl Wand, I went and got the larger version, Remington Pearl Pro Curl. Unlike the wand, this one does not taper towards the end, and thus the curls are looser. It's just as easy to use as the wand (I ditched the "protective glove", it's really thin and you can't feel the hair in your grip with it) or even easier. My hair is so long that I sometimes have problems fitting all the hair on the wand, and the strand can slide towards the end of the wand if wound too tightly. There are not similar problems with the Pro Curl, it's so big there's plenty of room for the hair strand and it doesn't slide anywhere. I think loose curls make my hair look neater, the ends can look a bit frizzy when left straight.

Picture from the Remington page.

White and green tea
I got a packet of white tea by Nordqvist before Christmas, mainly because the package was so nice ;P I usually drink a lot of tea, but my favourites have all been black tea so far, so I was surprised that the white tea was so tasty! I've also tasted some green teas and most are really nice, though not as nice as white tea.

Picture from the Nordqvist tea company page.

Gel nails
I ordered a pile of nail tips from China recently, and got a few new new types I had not tried before. I'm itching to try purple glitter tips and tiny white french tips, especially now that my own nails are not looking so nice. I think the cold weather of December dried them out, and now they are constantly breaking. My friend Anniina is coming over today to try her skills at gel nails, I volunteered to offer a hand or two to experiment on :P

New Year's Look

Happy New Year! My 2012 has been great, I hope the next year will be as good. Wishing a positive and inspiring year for all my readers too!

I wanted something colourful to celebrate the new year, so I decided to do a look by Madam Noire, specifically her Hearbreaker look. I have the same palette, so it wasn't too hard. I didn't know what colour Corrupt by Makeup Geek actually was, so I just though it looked like the crease was darkened a bit with black or dark grey, so I replaced it with a matte black. My blending is far from perfect, but I think the look still works :)

I used:
Sugarpill Heartbreaker palette (dark pink, lime green, light turquoise and a dark blue)
Sugarpill Bulletproof (matte black)
Sugarpill Tako (matte white)
Black gel liner
Black mascara
Sugarpill Saint false lashes

I think the eyeshadow shows a bit better in these face shots, thought they are overexposed. Me and the camera flash just don't get along, I haven't learned what settings work best in this apartment!

This one shows the colours very true!
